Leadership from the Inside Out
According to Stephen Covey, “The private victory precedes the public victory.” In other words, in order to be successful with others we must first be successful with ourselves. In this sense, leadership is an inside-out activity. Leaders can only lead others as well as they are leading themselves. People “buy” the person first, then the plan. If they don’t believe in the person, they will only follow half-heartedly.
This two-day workshop will challenge your beliefs about leadership. It examines the topic from the inside out, with you at the center.
Explorers have long used the compass to guide them on long journeys. Without it, the journey would be impossible. Similarly, each of us has an internal compass—a set of values, beliefs and motives that serves as a beacon lighting our path. Some call it a mission or a life purpose. And to be an effective leader, it is crucial to get clarity on your “True North.”Why? Because “followership” is a voluntary act, and people will follow only if there is a strong sense of identity and purpose to the leader. According to author John Maxwell, “If you turn around and look and no one is following, then you aren’t leading. You’re just taking a walk!”
When are people willing to be influenced or to follow? Only when they sense a leader’s clarity of purpose, the true source of all leadership. Success with others occurs from the inside out—by clarifying your own values and purpose.
This self-examining workshop will challenge you to examine your personal beliefs, motives and values, and to discover your internal compass. You will consider questions like:
- Why do I want to lead others? (Be honest!)
- In what area of my life does leadership emerge?
- Am I truly leading or just taking a walk? How do I know?
- If asked, could my friends and family identify my top values in life? (If not. What is the implication for my leadership?)
- Deep down, who am I? Am I clear on my life purpose?
- Would others say my daily behaviors are aligned with my stated values?
Through introspection, small group discussion and simulations, you will wrestle with the answers to these questions and more. If you want to earn followers, then you must know the answers to these provocative questions.
